Positive Progress based off Latest Blood Workup

Yay, CB’s progress is continually being reflected in the blood workup CB partakes in every 4-6 months or so. The highlights are that all his iron levels are within normal range, his IgA levels are still rising, his CMP was completely normal, and his homocysteine levels are getting close to the low-end of normal. What does all this mean? His diet and supplements are working!! We implemented the modified diet and many of the supplements based off CB’s original blood workup test results from April last year. You can read more about where CB started from blood workup-wise in my blog at Current diet and supplements.

The number of tests performed with CB’s blood workup has grown since his first one a year and a half ago. On the latest workup, the following tests were performed:

  • CBC w/autodiff w/platelets
  • CMP
  • Ferritin
  • Iron and IBC
  • Immunoglob IgA
  • Immunoglob IgG
  • Immunoglob IgM
  • Immunoglob IgE
  • Folic Acid?
  • Magnesium
  • Lipid Panel
  • TSH Free to Reflex T4
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D, 25
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K1
  • Methylmalonic Acid
  • Zinc, serum
  • Homocysteine

Additional Tests Performed on Previous Workups

  • Copper
  • Carnintine Free & Total
  • Lactid Acid, Plasma
  • TTG IgA

Presently, the items that were out of normal range are the following:

  • Immunoglob A – desired range (22-159) – Current Value – 16 (previously reported as <7, 7, and 12) – very promising progress – THESE ANTIBODIES ARE PROTEINS THAT FIGHT AGAINST BACTERIA, INFECTIONS, TOXINS, AND VIRUSES AND ARE FOUND IN MUCUS SECRETIONS IN OUR TEARS, SALIVA, GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT, SWEAT, GENITAL, RESPIRATORY, AND COLOSTRUM AND A LITTLE BIT IN OUR BLOOD STREAM.
  • Within the CBC – WBC (White Blood Count)- desired range (6.0-17.5) – Current Value – 4.5 (previously 3.9, 8.2, and 4.7) – still unsure why these are low. maybe due to a compromised immune system related to the low IgA? We will check the genetics results in early March to see if that points to any cause. – THESE FIGHT INFECTIONS BY ATTACKING BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND GERMS THAT INVADE THE BODY)
  • Homocysteine – desired range (5-12) – Current Value – 4.3 (previously 5.0, not tested, 3.3) – Since the value is higher we will just wait for the genetics results in early March to see if that points to any cause. – CURRENT MEDICAL THINKING IS THAT THIS IS NOT TROUBLING UNLESS IT IS HIGH B/C IT CAN BE RELATED TO HEART PROBLEMS. BIOMED THINKS THAT LOW VALUES MAY INDICATE OTHER DEFICIENCIES AND IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN TO HAVE LOW VALUES.
  • Immunoglob E – desired range (<60) – Current Value 79.6 (previously reported as 61 in an allergy test performed last May) – Our thinking is that his body is reacting to all the mold in the environment. we also will get our first air purifier in the mail today to see if we can make the inside of our house more allergen free. THESE BINDS TO ALLERGENS AND TRIGGERS THE RELEASE OF SUBSTANCES FROM MAST CELLS THAT CAN CAUSE INFLAMMATION.
  • Vitamin E (ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL)- desired range (5.5-9) – Current Value (13.7)  (previously not tested, 16.8, 17.8) – may be related to CB’s diet or it could also show that his body is not properly absorbing Vitamin E

We definitely feel CB’s leaky gut is healing. We will periodically give CB some dairy (maybe 1-2x every week or two) but we do not allow any wheat or soy. We also really restrict putting bad stuff (preservatives, dyes, excessive sugars, etc.) into his body. If we can get the IgA levels within the normal range and keep them there for a few months, then we plan to play more with his diet and see what his body can tolerate at that point.

Tips: If you have blood work performed on your child, double-check fasting recommendations, and supplement restrictions prior to testing. Sometimes you may want to see the results with supplements in their body and sometimes you may want to see how their body is working without any interference. Also, some supplements will falsely adjust some of the vitamin or other levels.
